Finnish-ed Power

The long summer break can drag for some children, who are restless by the third week with too little to occupy them. For those of us who stay behind while others head off on holiday, there is a small consolation: the photographs that arrive from readers who spot interesting machinery while they are away.

This year’s crop has included a pair of vehicles photographed in Finland by a reader whose family were visiting relatives there. The vehicles had worked for the Finnish electricity board and were parked outside an old power station.

A pair of working vehicles

One of the two was fitted with a HIAB crane, which by the reader’s reckoning would have made it somewhat top-heavy when rolling. The other, a Unimog, was noted for a surprisingly plush interior given its age and the nature of its working life.

The condition of the two vehicles invites a little speculation. One appears to have been restored at some point, judging by how well it has held up. The Unimog also looks sound, though the state of its wheels and tyres suggests it was simply parked up after its final shift rather than treated to any cosmetic attention.

Holiday finds welcome
